Pragmatics and Semantics
Many of the current philosophical approaches to pragmatics focus on semantics. For instance, Brandom focuses on linguistic meaning (albeit from a pragmatic perspective).
Others take a more comprehensive view of pragmatics, such as relevance theory, which attempts to study the underlying processes of an utterance by a hearer. But this approach tends to ignore other aspects of pragmatism, such as epistemic debates over truth.
What exactly is pragmatism?
Pragmatism offers an alternative to continental philosophy and analytic philosophy. It was developed by Charles Sanders Peirce. It was expanded by his friend and colleague William James, and later developed by Josiah Royce. It was influential in areas of inquiry ranging from philosophy of science to theology however, it also found its place in ethics and politics, aesthetics, philosophy of language and social theory. The pragmatist tradition continues to grow.
The fundamental premise of classical pragmatism is the pragmatic maxim, a rule for defining the significance of hypotheses by investigating their 'practical consequences' - their implications for the experience of specific circumstances. This gives rise to a distinctive epistemological outlook that is a form of 'inquiry-based epistemology' and an anti-Cartesian interpretation of the norms that govern inquiry. The early pragmatists generally disagreed on the issue of whether pragmatism can think of itself as a philosophical system that is based on a monism regarding truth (following Peirce), or a broad-based alethic pluralism (James and Dewey).
Understanding knowledge is a major concern for pragmatists. Some pragmatists, such as Rorty are likely to be skeptical of any notion of knowledge based on the basis of 'instantaneous experiences. Others, such as Peirce and James, are sceptical of the theory of correspondence as a source of truth which holds that true beliefs are those that represent reality 'correctly'.

Semantics and Pragmatics are often seen as being on opposite sides of a continuum, with semantics on the near side and pragmatics on the other. Carston for instance asserts that there are at least three main types of modern pragmatics: those who view it as a philosophy along the lines of Grice; those who focus on its interaction with grammar; and those who are concerned with the interpretation of utterances. Near-side pragmatics is thought to include such issues as clarification of ambiguity or vagueness, reference to proper names, indexicals, demonstratives, anaphors, as well as presupposition. It is also believed to encompass questions that require precise descriptions.
What is the relation between pragmatics and semantics?
Pragmatics is the study of meaning within language placed within context. It is a subset of linguistics and examines the way that people use words to convey different meanings. It is often compared with semantics, which studies the literal meaning of words in a sentence or chunk of conversation.
The relationship between semantics and pragmatism is a complex one. The most important distinction is that pragmatics considers other factors that go beyond the literal meaning of words, such as the intended meaning and the context in which the utterance was spoken. This allows a more nuanced understanding to be formed of the meaning of a sentence. Semantics also considers the relationship between words while pragmatics concentrates more on the relationships between the interlocutors as well as their context.
In recent years, the neopragmatism movement has been heavily focusing on metaphilosophy and the philosophy of language. It has largely abandoned the value theories and metaphysics of classical pragmatism. However, some neopragmatists have been developing a metaethics based on the ideas of pragmatics from classical pragmatism and experiences.
Charles Sanders Peirce, William James and others were among the first to create classical pragmatism. Both were influential thinkers who published a number of books. Their works are still widely considered in the present.
Although pragmatism can be a good alternative to the continental and analytic philosophical mainstream, it's not without criticism. Certain philosophers, for instance have claimed that deconstructionism isn't an original philosophical concept and that pragmatism simply represents an expression.
In addition to these critics the pragmatism of the past was challenged by scientific and technical developments. For instance, pragmatists struggled to reconcile their opinions on science with the evolution of evolutionary theory, which was created by a non-pragmatist, Richard Dawkins.
Despite these difficulties the pragmatism movement continues to grow in its popularity throughout the world. It is an important third option to the continental and analytic philosophical traditions, and has a variety of practical applications. It is a growing field of inquiry, with numerous schools of thought forming and incorporating pragmatism's principles into their own philosophy.
